Monroe
Monroe New York is the most well-known gateway to Orange County due to the wealth of shopping options within the borders of the town and the Town of Woodbury including popular destinations like the Woodbury Common Premium Outlets, Harriman Commons and Woodbury Centre. Second only to Tuxedo (Tuxedo Park) in proximity to New York City, Monroe is conveniently located within minutes of future Interstate 86, Interstate 87 and Route 6 (Palisades Parkway, 9W or Bear Mountain Bridge to name a few). While Monroe is split into the Town of Monroe and Village of Monroe, both locales are just a short drive to multiple Shortline Bus commuter pick-up stations and the nearby Harriman train station which enables commuters to arrive at Penn Station via Secaucus Junction.
Being one of the most popular destinations in Orange County, Monroe offers a variety of “big box” stores to choose from including Wal-Mart, Target, BJ’s, Kohls and Starbucks but, unlike many towns in America that lose their local flavor with the introduction of large retailers, Monroe maintains a small town feel in it’s village where mom ‘n pop shops continue to thrive. On the weekends the Village of Monroe comes to life with people shopping, joggers and dog walkers enjoying Crane Park and the park’s beautiful masterpiece: Mill Pond. For more green space you need not walk far; the Heritage Trail and Smith-Clove Park are within walking distance of the village. Monroe is also the birthplace of Velveeta Cheese which is celebrated through an annual cheese festival that is packed full of fun, family-friendly activities.
Before blossoming into a suburb of New York City the Monroe area was heralded as the ultimate vacation spot for the better part of the twentieth century because of it’s fresh, clean air and gorgeous lakes. Among the lakes in the Town of Monroe are the highly sought after Walton & Sapphire lakes which offer a number of different home styles in varying price ranges. Around 1999 the Monroe area experienced an intense period of growth all the way through 2005 which helped develop the appealing mix of big and small retail in addition to new housing options.
